RB Berkane Defy Earthquake, Land in Benin City for B’Insurance

Despite the devastating earthquake that wreaked in Morocco, Bendel Insurance’s opponents in tomorrow’s second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, RB Berkane, arrived in Benin City yesterday to battle for ticket to the next round.

Media Officer of  Bendel Insurance FC, Kehinde Osagiede confirmed to THISDAY yesterday evening that the Moroccans arrive the Edo State capital at about midday and were dispatched to their hotel.

“They were given a place to train  before being allowed into the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium pitch to have a feel of the turf on Friday (today) in line with standard practice,”observed the hardworking media officer of the ‘Benin Arsenal’.

The Moroccans defied speculations that they may not be able to honour the tie in Benin because of the earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude that has claimed well over 3,000 people in the Atlas region of the North African country.

Information from the Edo Sports Commission headed by Olympian Yusuf Alli, hinted yesterday that both teams will wear black arm band to mourn those who have passed away in the worst history of earthquakes in Morocco.

Also, flags of both countries are going to fly at half mast with one minute silence observed in honour of those who have died in the sad incident.

RB Berkane are two-time champions of the CAF Confederation Cup and have also won the Super Cup once. They are the most successful Moroccan club in the  continent.

They will however find in Bendel Insurance tough customers tomorrow when they meet at the famous Ogbemudia Stadium with the reverse fixture taking place in Morocco a week later.

Bendel Insurance FC who have remained unbeaten this season, were the champions of the CAF Cup in 1994. They also won the WAFU Cup thrice in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
