Many Nigerians might be dying daily from conditions related to improper use of drugs than most people are aware of because very few cases of deaths in the country go through postmortem examination to the ascertain the actual cause of death.
Director and Head of Inspection and Monitoring Department, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Abuja, Mrs Anthonia Aruya, made this observation while speaking with newsmen in Asaba at the weekend on the “enforcement exercise” conducted by the council in parts of Delta State.
Aruya, who lamented that many people in the country often endangered their lives and those of their loved ones through improper use of medicines simply because they are not conscious of “the fact that all drugs are poisons and so they must be properly used.”
A total of 138 out of the 162 premises visited by the council were sealed for various offences, she revealed.
The staggering figure, which included 27 pharmacies and 111 patent medicine shops, represents over 85 percent of the premises visited by the PCN inspection and monitoring team in a number of towns across Delta State.
