Policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at the weekend clashed with suspected kidnappers at the Elepete area of Ogijo, and at the end of the gun duel killed two, while one sustained gunshot injuries.

Residents of the sprawling community have fled the place for fear of a reprisal attack by the hoodlums who may suspect they may have given information to the Police.

Acting on a tip-off, the police had stormed the community on learning that there were some strange persons behaving suspiciously.

Going undercover, operatives from SARS moved in to the community and arrested one Victor Worimegbe near the creek and during interrogation, he confessed that he is a member of a kidnap gang that has come for business.

He then took the operatives to Topkatt Hotel where other gang members were lodged but an attempt to round them up resulted in the gun duel.

The suspects, on sighting the operatives, opened fire while trying to create an escape route. Their plans were foiled by the police who returned fire and succeeded in subduing them.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said: “Our men received information that some suspected kidnappers have entered the community. SARS operatives were deployed to the place and they succeeded in arrested one of the suspects.
“Victor Worimegbe, was the suspect who took the police to Topkatt hotel where other gang members were lodged. Other suspects including Ekpokime, Abule and Ebimobese tried to escape by firing at our policemen and the operatives responded.
