Nigerian Swimmers Show Class in Senegal
Nigerian swimmers placed third at the just concluded African (CANA) Zone Two Swimming Championship held in Senegal.
Senegal, the host county placed first followed by Mali, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso in that order.
According to the Media Officer of the federation, Felix Simire, Team Nigeria won 10 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals for a total of 35.
The female members of Team Nigeria won more than 75 per cent of the medals at stake in the women category to earn the Nigerian ladies the best female team award.
Ifeakchukwu Nmor, who won the 50m butterfly event received an award for the best performance (male), while Team Nigeria mixed medley relay emerged the new record holder in the 4 x 100m event.
Every member of the Nigerian team won at least a medal, individually.
The President of the Swimming and Life Saving Federation of Senegal, Dr. Mohammed Diop, who is also the vice-president of the African body, CANA, showered praises on Team Nigeria on the feat.
Apart from Nigeria, all the other countries that took part in the competition trained in France, Monaco and the United States of America.
Team Nigeria was coached by Emmanuel Goodie Emefuna and Sunday Tilije, under the supervision of the Chairman, Technical Committee of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Steve Onyeacholam at the renovated National Stadium pool in Surulere, Lagos.
