Mercedes-Benz Boasts Worldwide Double-Digit Growth in May
Mercedes-Benz has reported a remarkable increase in sales May with unit purchase rising by 12.9% to 170,625 vehicles.
A statement by the auto company said in the period of January through May, 818,175 vehicles with the three-pointed star were delivered to customers (+12.3%), more than ever before in the first five months of a year. This Stuttgart-based company achieved record unit sales in each of Europe and Asia-Pacific last month. Mercedes-Benz was the market leader in the USA, Japan, Canada, Australia and Taiwan in May.
“Our double-digit growth in Europe and Asia-Pacific made a major contribution to the strong unit sales of Mercedes-Benz in May,” said Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales.
Sales in Europe increased by a strong 14.2% yielding a sale of 74,268 units in May while there was a 24.2% increase in the Asia-Pacific region with a total of 57,438 vehicles handed over to customers in May. This increase was primarily due to double-digit growth in the major markets of Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Belgium. In Germany, the domestic market, 23,343 vehicles were delivered to customers (+4.9%).
Also, in China, the biggest market, Mercedes-Benz achieved a new record of more than 38,000 vehicles sold (+38.9%) while the company’s leadership was continued in Australia, Japan and Taiwan. In the NAFTA region, 34,323 units of Mercedes-Benz models were sold in May of which 29,299 of those automobiles were delivered to customers in the USA thus maintaining the market leader status among the premium manufacturers in May.
Unit Sales by Model: Sales of Mercedes-Benz compact cars increased to a new record this May with a total of 53,618 units delivered to customers (+15.6%).
he A and B-Class, the CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA were particularly popular in China, where unit sales more than doubled in May. The E-Class Saloon and Estate were among the best-selling Mercedes-Benz models as well. Growth was especially strong in Europe last month, the first full month of sales of the new E-Class Saloon. Since 2009, more than 1.6 million Saloons and Estates of the predecessor model of the E-Class have been delivered to customers.
The SUVs continued to make significant contributions to the growth of Mercedes-Benz, with sales of 58.517 units last month. This means that May of last year – the previous strongest-selling May – was surpassed by 42.0%. In Great Britain, Australia and South Korea, unit sales more than doubled compared with the prior-year month. The strongest growth in May was posted by the GLC, which is meanwhile available to customers around the world also as a plug-in hybrid: the GLC 350 e 4MATIC.
Sales of the smart cars for two and for four models also increased at a significantly double-digit rate this May as 12,822 cars were delivered to customers worldwide (+15.1%). The smart models were especially popular in the Asia-Pacific region, where unit sales increased by more than 50% last month.
It’s obvious Mercedes-Benz has not relented effort to clinch substantial market share with the introduction of completely new models like the all-new A-Class, CLA, GLA etc, with relatively lower price tags appealing to even younger buyers. Part of the newest models introduced locally in Nigeria this year incljudes the GLA and the GLE.

Meanwhile, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet has made global debut looking like a Mini S-Class. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet made its global debut the day before the Geneva Motor Show officially begins, taking a lot of cues from its S-Class bigger brother.
Coming in the form of a C300 Cabriolet with RWD or 4Matic and a performance-focused Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet, the two cars are the latest droptops to join the German automaker’s lineup, and the very first convertibles based on the compact C-Class.
The two convertibles come standard with Mercedes’ wonderful AirScarf, a clever neck-level heating system that helps you enjoy open-air motoring even when it starts to get chilly. The climate control system also changes based on whether the top is up or down. If the top is up, it functions as it does in the coupe, and when the top is down, it directs air to the driver’s hands and steering wheel.
With its top up, the C-Class has nearly identical dimensions to the coupe, except it’s a wee bit taller. The multi-layer acoustic soft top helps keeps things quiet in the cabin and comes in four colors: black, dark brown, dark blue and dark red. It takes 20 seconds to open or close and can be operated at speeds of up to 31 mph. The seats are also covered in heat-reflecting leather, so it won’t burn your butt after sitting in the sun for a while, and the car has automatic seatbelt extenders so you won’t strain your precious arm reaching for the buckle.
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with stop/start will power the C300 and is hooked up to a standard nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine outputs 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph happens in 6.3 seconds and top speed is limited to 130 mph.
Mercedes-Benz pickup truck: Also, a new Mercedes-Benz pickup truck is rumored to arrive before the end of this year.
According to Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz van division, the new truck will debut, at least in concept form, before the end of 2016. That points towards a debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in September.
The new Mercedes pickup truck will be based on the Nissan NP300 Navara, a truck that Nissan sells in European and world markets. It is rumored to be called the Mercedes X-Class, though it could also wear the GLX moniker.
As of right now, Mercedes said that it is assessing the U.S. market to decide whether or not the truck will be offered here. If it does come to the U.S., it would be sold as a luxury truck meant to appeal to existing Mercedes owners who might be looking for a bit more capability.
