As part of its effort towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goal 3, which is the health and wellbeing, the Junior Chambers International has taken free medicare to Abuja communities that are lacking primary health care facilities.
The 2017 Executive Vice President, JCI Abuja Unity, Ms. Grace Niniola said the community health outreach, a quarterly intervention programme started in January in partnership with Sam Empowerment Foundation and Paul Mission Inc, and would run throughout the year.
According to her, “In our own little way, we decided to come to this community to deworm the children under five, to give nutritional talk, to have them tested for malaria and malaria treatment given to those that have tested positively. Today, we decided to make it an all encompassing project to test for HIV status of the children, lactating mothers and all the adults around.”
She explained that communities where similar project have been carried out were identified after conducting a need assessment of such community.
Niniola stressed; “Our choice of Galadimawa community is because it is a surbub of the FCT and not too many privileged information get here. The outreach is a quarterly programme and for the year we are supposed to have four of it. This is the second one we are having, we are still having two more to go before the year runs out. From my observations, malaria and worms in children and adults is prevalent issue here, for the HIV/AIDS, no positive case here so far. “
Also, the Team Lead of the Project,Mr. Joel Uwabor said the medical outreach was to ensure health and wellbeing of the people in the community are taken care of.
He added: “We are ensuring that we are working towards the SDGs goal 3, which is the health and wellbeing of the people of the community are improved. In January we are in Kuruduma community where this same intervention was done there.
