Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has inaugurated what his government christened State Development Council (SDC) Coordinators or ‘mini governors’ and their members for the 305 INEC wards in the state and the idea was to take governance to the grassroots for development.

Each ward has twenty-one SDC Committee members with a coordinator who would carry out functions in the wards as the representatives of the governor.

Inaugurating the SDC coordinators and members thursday at the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC) Owerri, Okorocha said the SDC would be paying pensioners in their wards instead of the pensioners coming to Owerri for their pensions and that would save them from undue inconveniences.

The governor also said they would carry out renovation of schools, supervision of government’s Health Centres, schools and other public establishments adding that they would equally monitor security developments in their wards.
He said the SDC is the new form of government that brings down administration to the grassroot for the purpose of development, adding that it is the link between the state government and the people.

According to him, “Two things which we must do as a people is to develop our land and promote our culture. For every given ward, society, or state to grow, they must tap from their resources and cultural heritage. Help does not come from outside, help comes from within”.

He continued, “The best form of government is the government which allows the people to govern themselves. No one can govern a people neither can any single individual govern millions of people. The wisdom in governance is to introduce government to the people to enable them govern themselves”.

For him, “With SDC in shape, the issue of insecurity will be a thing of the past because it will be an insult for a well structured security to be in place and a criminal from another village will be terrorizing them. Security will be double assured with the introduction of SDC.”

Okorocha said “the SDC would help the state government to identify the areas of development needed in each of the communities especially in the areas of road rehabilitation and security.”
