NSCDC Arrests Two for Vandalising Ikeja Disco Cable
Chiemelie Ezeobi
Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Tuesday arrested two suspects for allegedly vandalising the power distribution cable of the Ikeja Electricity said to be  worth N500,000.
The suspects who were paraded yesterday at the command’s headquarters at Alausa, identified as 32-year-old Remi Aina and 22-year-old Mayowa Adedoyin, were apprehended by the anti-vandal team of the command.
According to the NSCDC Lagos State Commander, Tajudeen Balogun, the operatives were able to arrest the suspects with the help of some resident of the state who fed them information about the vandals.
He said the suspects went to vandalise the cable at around 2a.m, when they thought most security agencies had gone to bed, without knowing that some persons saw them.
He said: “Cutting of cables are now becoming rampart, but if the suspects do not have buyers, they wouldn’t be going to vandalise cables on daily basis.
“This means that there is an increase on the attack of government properties across the state.
“Cutting of the cable by the suspects has thrown many communities in the state into darkness, which has also made the power company’s effort to illuminate some communities  backward.â€
Balogun said they are also working with the some cable marketers in the state since cut cables that are sold in the market are often stolen, thus many of the marketers have been arrested.
One of the suspects Aina, denied his involvement in the cutting of the cable, adding: “I was sleeping when the NSCDC operatives came to arrest me. They are roping me for what I don’t know.â€
The second suspect, Adedoyin, who is a commercial bus conductor, said he saw a friend with a saw but had no idea what it was for.
He said: “It wad when I moved closer to the scene that he brought out the cut cable. I was promised N15, 000 not to expose them.â€
Meanwhile, Balogun said the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.
