The victims and traders of the Owerri Main Market that was demolished by the Imo State Government last month may heave a sign of relief as the Chairman of Zinox Technologies, Dr. Leo Stan Ekeh, redeemed the pledge of N50 million he made during the demolition exercise to cushion the effects of their losses.
Stating why he donated the N50 million to the traders and the victims of the demolished Ekeukwu Owerri market, Ekeh said as an Imo citizen, it would be a failure on his part not to assist his fellow citizens who are in distress, especially when their means of livelihood was forcefully removed from them.
The philanthropist who stated this in Owerri, the state capital, when he handed over a cheque of N50 million to the officials of the Fidelity Bank who are to the disburse the money to the traders, maintained that he did not do it because he was the richest person in the state but to assist them move on with life.
He also commended the committee for the rehabilitation of the displaced Ekeukwu market traders headed by Chief Ambrose Ejiogu for ensuring that the main traders with shops at the market were verified.
According to him, “when I donated the money, it was misinterpreted that I had done it for politics but it was not because of that, after all I have been donating to several associations in the state in the past. If I cannot help the people in my own state who are in distress like those in any other places, then I am a failure.
“I have built ICT Centres in all the tertiary institutions in the state and I have equally built houses for widows in the three senatorial zones of the state through the current first lady of the state quietly because I believe that suffering people in the state need to be assisted. So, the donation was simply to help the government and the people, and I urge others to also help. So, it is not politics, and if I need to play politics, I think I have the capacity to do so.â€
Ekeh called on the state government to partner him because as a progressive, he supports positive development in the state.
Meanwhile, Ejiogu, thanked him for his generosity in providing a palliative measures for the displaced traders at the demolished Ekeukwu Owerri market.
He urged the people to remain calm and law abiding particularly the affected traders as it is only in a peaceful environment that the relief provided by the chairman of Zinox Technologies can be disbursed.
