Opeifa Handball Tourney Ends Friday
Activities making the Season 4 of the annual Opeifa Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship holding at the Rowe Park Sports Centre Yaba will be rounded-off today when all the eight finals in both the boys and girls categories will be on the card.
This afternoon, Lagos City College Yaba and Zumratu Islamic Senior High School will look horns in the senior boys final while Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School will take on CMS Senior Grammar School in the senior final. Today’s grand finale will begin at 9am with the junior finals at the open court.
To get to today’s final, Lagos City College defeated Ikosi Senior High School 13 – 6 while Zumratu Islamic outscored Jagumolu Senior Girls Grammer School 3 -1.
In the junior category, United Christian Junior Secondary School will face Eletu Ejigbo Junior High School in the Girls final while Herbert Macaulay Junior High School will tackle Jibowu Junior High School. In the Boys final, United Christian Junior School beat Herbert Macaulay 3 – 1 while Eletu Ejigbo out classed ST. Luke’s Junior Grammar School 6 – 4 in the semi-final even as Jagumolu High School beat Mobolaji Bank Anthony Junior High School 14 – 13.
Interestingly, new champions are to emerge this year as the defending champions in both the senior boys and girls categories have since crashed out of the race to pave way for new champions
Secretary General of the Lagos Sate Handball Association, Fatimoh Ojikutu and the former chairperson of the Lagos Sate Handball Association Adeola Opeifa, both applauded the development which they attributed to the equal opportunity given to all the schools to use the Rowe Park Sports Centre facilities for their training.
Meanwhile death was adverted at the venue yesterday when a female player suspected to be fasting, collapsed on the court but thanks for the quick intervention of the Lagos State Sports Commission medical team that revived her instantly and she continue her play.
