Piqued by activities of cultists and other security challenges at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, the management of the institution said it has engaged about 180 security operatives to check security challenges in the school and ensure that academic stability is guaranteed.
The Rector, Alhaji Moshood Elelu, who stated this in a chat with journalists during the annual Ramadan lecture organised by the institution, said the security operatives engaged include those from the military service, Police, Department of Security Service (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the local vigilante group.
He said since the management engaged such large number of security agents, the institution has not suffered insecurity as peace and tranquillity reign high on campus.
The rector explained that security threatening activities like cultism and student unrest have not been heard of on campus unlike in the past before the new security arrangement was made. Because the arrangement was well organised, the students cooperated with the agents to always ensure security on campus.
He explained that the arrangement, apart from guaranteeing security on campus, also contributes to the academic stability the polytechnic currently enjoys.
The rector said as a result of the stable academic calendar, the institution is now one of the most sought after by admission seekers, adding that it has become a first choice because of the accreditation status of its courses, as 59 of the 60 courses have been accredited.
Elelu, who is the Chairman, Council of Rectors in Nigeria, said his administration since inception has been able to execute 47 projects cut across various departments.
In his iftar lecture, an Islamic scholar, Ustaz Ismail Akanbi explained the importance of Ramadan fasting, saying that it is one of the things that could help a Muslim to gain entrance into heaven.
He said the fasting makes a Muslim to be more pious and that when one is pious, he will likely have no difficulty being in heaven as against hell.
The cleric enjoined Muslims to be kind to their fellow human beings and worship God with their wealth, which was given to them by God.
