BUK Expels 33 Students, Warns 70 over Examination Malpractice

The Senate of Bayero University Kano (BUK), at its 365th meeting has approved the expulsion of 33 students of the school for allegedly getting involved in various forms of examination malpractices during the first semester examination in the current 2017/2018 academic session.

The expulsion of the students was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director, Directorate of Examinations, Admissions and Records (DEAR), Hajiya Amina Umar Abdullahi, in Kano Tuesday.

The statement also revealed that 12 students were rusticated to repeat a session, while 70 others were served with a warning.

Equally, two students were exonerated from any offence and two cases were deferred for further investigation.

The students were expelled for getting involved in examination misconduct in accordance with regulation 19.17(Ai, iii, iv, v, vi, vii x, xii) as the case may be.

However, over 219 Qur’anic memorizers (Alarammomi) have been trained by the university’s Centre for Qur’anic Studies.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello, described the occasion as not only historic, but “a dream come true”.

He said the BUK management decided to set up the centre as part of its effort to correct the earlier mistakes made in which Qur’anic memorisers (Alarammomi), though intellectuals in their own callings, but due to lack of western education, were relegated to the background and could not be allowed into the nation’s scheme of things.

Prof. Bello stated that the Alarammomi underwent trainings in General Science, English, Elementary Arithmetic and Computer science as well as Teaching Methods.

He stated that at the end of the training, they were on that day being certificated by the university. This will enable them secure employment as teachers, contest elective positions and even further their education to higher level “if they chose to”, he remarked.

Earlier, the Director of the Centre, Dr. Muhammad Babangida Muhammad, had traced the history of the establishment of the centre and gave kudos to the pioneer Director of the Centre, Prof. Ibrahim Muhammad, as well as commended the foresight of the university’s management for establishing the centre.

He said a total of 219 Alarammomi were trained by the centre, adding that the centre strengthened the Qur’anic recitation of the trainees as well as exposed them to training in other Western education courses.

Dr. Babangida said the certificates that would be issued to them would qualify them to secure employment as teachers and as imams of juma’at mosques all over the Islamic world.
