A pro-democracy group, Movement for Democratic Goals (MDG), has raised the alarm over alleged plans by governors and senators on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to raise funds to the tune of billions of naira to lead several onslaught that would lead to the removal of Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
The National Coordinator of the group, Aliyu Abdulkareem, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday said, “We have been reliably informed by our sources in the APC that governors and senators on the platform of the party are holding several meetings to raise funds to begin several illegal processes that may force Saraki out of office by a group of minority senators.
“We also have it on good note that the governors and senators are planning to meet this week to finalise plans and raise the said funds as part of their individual commitment to the plans that would eventually lead to the impeachment of Saraki as Senate President.
“The meeting is at the instance of the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who, according to our source, has assured President Muhammad Buhari that he would leave no stone unturned in ensuring Saraki and Ekwerenadu are removed from office either by legal or crooked means, over Saraki’s defection from the APC to the PDP,” the group added.
“We have also reliably gathered that Oshiomhole by his assurance to the President has vowed to remove Saraki as Senate President by whatever means possible, and he’s exploring all possible and impossible means to achieve this.”
The group further noted that “while we are not oblivious of the fact that it is part of democracy for a Senate President to be impeached by a majority vote of the Senate and the constitution is explicit on this.
“We strongly condemn any illegal and unconstitutional attempt by the APC and its members to pooh-pooh the constitution in a desperate bid to impeach the Senate president by a minority vote.
“The constitution of the nation is supreme and as a group with great interest in defending democracy and democratic institutions, we will mobilise our members across the nation to protest and resist any plan by the APC, its national chairman, governors, senators and every other person planning to destroy our democracy. We will prove to them that Nigeria is greater than the APC and any other political party.”
