Human Rights Group Decries Nigeria’s Political Crisis
Sunday Okobi
Prominent advocacy and humanitarian organisation in Nigeria, Brothers Across Nigeria (BAN), has decried the current political crisis beclouding the country, citing the recent invasion of the National Assembly as the most condemnable and shameful.
Rising from its international conference held in Asaba, Delta State capital, the leadership of BAN condemned in strong terms the recent invasion of the National Assembly by men of the Department of State Service (DSS).
Speaking to journalists in Asaba, the Delta State capital, the newly-elected President of the organisation, Lewis Aitufe, also commended the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo for acting swiftly to defend democracy in the country.
The group, which has been in the forefront of drumming support for Nigerian military fighting terrorists and other criminals in the country, also cautioned politicians to desist from selfish acts that would derail the current democratic gains in the country.
Speaking further, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ken Agala, informed journalists that BAN would soon commence sensitisation of her members and the Nigerian public on the need to eschew acrimony and violence during the 2019 general elections, and help the government to build on its democratic benefits.
Agala further called upon Nigerian youths to get their PVCs, vote for candidates of their choices during the next elections and extricate themselves from the machinations of selfish leaders who do not have the interest of the country at heart.
“We plead with all Nigerians to join hands with the leaders to build a healthy country based on economic growth and social development. All Nigerians of voting age should register and get their PVCs in order to vote for the candidates of their choice rather than indulging in acts capable of derailing the dividends of democracy.
“The national leadership of BAN also commends Osinbajo for his quick intervention to save our democracy, the reformation of the Nigerian police among others since assuming the presidency in acting capacity. We pray
for divine strength and ability for him to continue to hold forth,” Agala stated.
