‘NMEP Remains Resolute in Rolling Back Malaria’

The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) has remained resolute in its push to put Nigeria on the list of countries with less Malaria burden.

In its third quarter media chat and with the theme ‘Use of LLIN for prevention of malaria’, its National Coordinator, Dr. Audu Bala Mohammed, reiterated on the need for constant use of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN), which are safe and have proven to be effective.

He said Personal Protection Measures (PPM) are unique products, clothing and materials used in the construction of houses that protect individuals from getting bitten by mosquitoes, while indoors‎ or outdoors and have become helpful ways in the control of mosquitoes.

While acknowledging that many people spend a better part of their time outdoors, and becoming susceptible to mosquito bites, he added that “unknown to many, mosquitoes are active at different times of the day and may bite indoors or outdoors‎, thereby causing malaria.

“Malaria remains a disease of public health concern in Africa and Nigeria, causing death in under five children and miscarriage in pregnant women. Although malaria is treatable and preventable, yet it is responsible for high outpatients’ admissions in hospitals.

“LLINs are safe and effective for prevention of malaria. WHO recommends LLIN coverage for all persons at the risk of malaria. LLINs are designed to protect people from mosquitoe bite, kill mosquitoes and are effective for 3-4 years after which time they need to be replaced.”

He said effective behaviour change communication strategies can help ensure that people at risk of malaria have access to LLINs, sleep inside an LLIN every night and properly maintain the nets.
