No fewer than 6,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun state.
In an elaborate rally held at Ijebu-Ode, the defectors who were welcomed into the new party by Mr Deji Ashiru, an Ogun East Senatorial district aspirant, identified absence of internal democracy and ideologies as the major factors responsible for dumping their respective previous political platforms and subsequently defecting to the ADC.
Addressing the defectors into the ADC fold, Ashiru said the new members drawn from the nine local government areas making Ogun East district, decided to join the party based on the six core values (accountability, service, humility, integrity, love and excellence) that he has brought to bear as a senatorial aspirant and also largely, in alignment with the ideologies of the party.
He said that it was only in Nigeria that the existing major political parties lacked ideologies which have been responsible for defection of their members.
“We borrowed our democracy from the United States of America where ideologies are more entrenched in the two major political parties-The Republican and The Democrats-but the reverse is the case in Nigeria.
That is why we have been witnessing defections in the two major political parties (APC.and PDP) that we have in this country,,” said Ashiru.
He announced that he decided to join the Ogun East senatorial race to right the wrong of the past whereby his district was not given quality representation at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly by successive lawmakers.
He said the story of under-development in the senatorial district has not changed over the years, pointing out that he was out to make a difference.
