Meet Elohor Rita Ebieroma, a trailblazing Business Intelligence Developer and Lead at NOWNOW Nigeria. With a passion for technology and a knack for problem-solving, Elohor has made a significant impact in the IT industry.
In this interview, she shares her inspiring journey, from her early days in software development to her current role, and offers valuable insights on data analysis, business intelligence, and leadership.
What inspired you to pursue a career in Information Technology?
My journey into the world of Information Technology began in childhood. I vividly remember watching a TV program that featured a woman expertly managing a network room filled with LAN (Local Area Network) cables.
This was around the time mobile technology was debuting in Nigeria, and I was captivated by her expertise and confident presence. From that moment, I aspired to be just like her.
My fascination with computers deepened when my dad brought one home. This hands-on experience further fueled my passion for technology.
Later, I was thrilled to be admitted to Covenant University to study Information and Communication Engineering, a significant milestone that marked the beginning of my journey into the tech world.
While at university, I secured an internship with Proxynet Communications. This experience introduced me to the intricacies of software development processes, providing me with a clear perspective and a solid foundation to kickstart my career in tech.
Can you walk us through your experience in software development and programming?
My experience in software development and programming started a few years ago and includes a range of projects and technologies.
As I earlier mentioned, I started my software development journey at Covenant University, where I studied Information and Communication Engineering. Here, I learned the fundamentals of programming and software development, gaining expertise in languages such as PHP, Java, and C++.
This helped kickstart my career journey as a Software Developer at Jumia, where I worked on several content extraction projects for the online real estate hub.
Over the years, I have worked in different sectors where I have leveraged my skills in software development to help businesses make strategic business decisions.
I have also worked with software projects in Nigeria. These Projects were core products that comprehensively included Immigration, eGovernance, and Smart Technology.
How do you approach data analysis, and what tools do you prefer to use?
My approach to data analysis is systematic, involving several key steps to ensure accuracy and derive the right insights. Let me explain these steps to demonstrate how I provide the right insights.
First, I define the objectives. Understanding the project or the reason behind a request is crucial, as it provides a clear understanding of what must be done to accomplish the project.
Secondly, I focus on data collection, identifying the sources and performing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to stage the data environment for the report. Thirdly, I conduct exploratory data analysis, using statistical analytics and visualisation techniques to understand the data better and identify patterns, trends, and potential outliers.
Other techniques include data transformation, analysis and modelling, interpretation and insights, and finally, visualisation and reporting.
Regarding the tools, I believe every aspiring data analyst should start with the basics: SQL and Excel. As one advances, one should take on other visualisation and programming tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Python, or R. Personally, I prefer to use SQL, Excel, Power BI, and Python. These are the tools I have learnt and worked with across my various roles.
