With a number of regular Super Eagles stars absent for next week’s Nigeria versus Mexico international friendly, Franco-German senior national team Manager, Gernot Rohr had little choice but to fill in the gap with home-based players, who he hitherto does not believe in and has been trying to encourage them ahead of the encounter.

Rohr continues to observe the home-based Super Eagles players before their departure to the United States, where they face CONCACAF powerhouse in an international friendly on July 4, 2021.
The Super Eagles are without their top players for the upcoming game because most of them are gearing up to resume pre-season training at their European clubs.

Despite the absence of the likes of Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and William Troost-Ekong. Rohr believes the Super Eagles can cause an upset when they face off against a team ranked eleventh in the world by FIFA.

Rohr has been left impressed by the performance of the invited players during the training sessions in Abuja.
Speaking to the Super Eagles Media team yesterday, the German football tactician said : “They are doing well, they are learning. The home-based player are in the rhythm of the competition.

“All the Super Eagles now are actually on holidays, resuming very soon training sessions with the clubs so they could not come that’s why it’s good to encourage these home-based players.
“They will have a difficult game, it is not impossible to win against Mexico, they have a great team but each match is open and I see here some players with good qualities.

“They are working hard, they are doing two training sessions a day and we are watching them, we are monitoring what they are doing as there will be a friendly also I hope, and a good selection for the departure to the United States.
“The coaches are doing well, Austin and Paul with my goalkeeper coach Alloy, and selection will be okay.”

History suggests that the Mexicans are favourites to win the friendly as they have not lost to the three-time African champions with their full complement of players in five previous meetings., but the North Americans managed just one win in regulation time in those matches.
