PSG Agree Two-year Deal with Sergio Ramos

TRANSFER …TRANSFER …TRANSFER …

Paris St Germain have struck a deal to sign Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, French radio network RMC reported late on Thursday.

Ramos, 35, has been a free agent after failing to agree a new contract with Real Madrid last month and leaving the club where he had spent the last 16 years and won four Champions League titles and five LaLiga crowns.

The RMC report said Ramos had agreed a two-year contract with PSG, who finished second behind champions Lille in Ligue 1 and were knocked out in the Champions League semifinals by Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have signed Netherlands midfielder Giorginio Wijnaldum after he ran down his deal with Liverpool while media reports say they are close to bringing in Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Inter Milan right back Achraf Hakimi.

Ramos missed a large chunk of last season with injuries and was left out of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad but said when leaving Real last month that he was determined to keep proving himself at the highest level even though his wages are expected to be lower in the French capital.

Length of contract was one of the reasons Ramos’ time in Madrid came to an end, with the veteran centre-back evidently keen to secure his future until he is likely to hang up his boots.

ESPN write that Ramos was drawn to the ‘ambitious’ project presented to him by PSG’s sporting director Leonardo, with the dethroned French champions likely going all out to reclaim their Ligue 1 crown and finally go all the way in the Champions League.

He is also thought to believe that he would adapt faster to life in Paris, with former Real Madrid teammates Keylor Navas and Angel Di Maria currently plying their trade there.

Centre-back was not initially a priority area for strengthening for PSG, but having allowed the evidently very able 36-year-old Thiago Silva leave a year ago only for him to go on to win the Champions League with Chelsea, Ramos’ availability on a free is viewed as too good an opportunity to pass up, while defence is an area head coach Mauricio Pochettino wants to bolster.

Les Parisiens’ boss is said to be keen for Ramos to impart his wisdom on the club’s less experienced defenders Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Abdou Diallo and Thilo Kehrer, who are all still under 28.
