A non-governmental organisation, Street Child and Welfare Initiative (SCCWI), has recently fed 1,700 children living on various streets and slums in Lagos in line with Sustainable Development Goal 2, zero hunger.

Some of the areas visited include Oshodi, Mushin, Okobaba in Ebute-Meta, and some slum areas in Iddo and Ikorodu, the Juvenile Welfare Centre Alakara, and the Special Correctional Centre Oregun.

As part of its tradition in the last 10 years, the SCCWI has been prioritising the needs of street and vulnerable children, and has continued her annual children’s day with kids from such background.

In her remarks, the President and Project Director of SCCWI, Comfort Alli, said although raising the needed funds to feed the initial 1,500 children was a challenge, they ended up feeding about 1,700 children.

The children got some food parks and drinks, cookies, hygiene kits, sewing kits, writing materials as well as water vacuum.

Specially designed for children in low-income communities, Alli enthused, “The excitement on the faces of the children is second to none. That is another reason we will continue to do our part to make them happy especially on children’s day”.

The programme was successful thanks to over 20 volunteers with support from partners like Fastizers Food and Confectionery, Aj & O Integrated Communications Statics and donations from individuals and organisations.

SCCWI was established in 2008 to provide social economic advantage to vulnerable children who are abandoned, neglected or impoverished by poverty and social inequalities.

Since 2008, SCCWI has predominantly focused on creating an enabling environment for the holistic development of underprivileged and disadvantaged children.

For the NGO, its programmes are complemented by research policy and advocacy efforts. And it has reached over 10,000 children through the vibrant and well-equipped welfare centre located in Yaba area of Lagos State.
