The families of those who lost their lives in the boat mishap in Kebbi State and those displaced by floods and other natural disasters in some parts of the state have benefitted from relief items donated by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The Director-General of the agency, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, while distributing the materials in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, yesterday, said the gesture was to ameliorate the suffering faced by the victims in the state.

The materials comprised of 12 sewing machines, 12 grinding machines, 12 welding machines, 50 hair clippers and 12 vulcanising machines.

Others were 12 generators, two tricycles, four motorcycles and 12 water pumping machines.

Jamoh, who was represented by the Deputy Director of the agency, Port Harcourt Office, Murad Ahmed, said it was also to complement the already magnanimous efforts of the state government.

According to him, “The palliative was aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of people affected by the flood and boat mishap as well as persons displaced internally for one reason or another.

“We have always thought that it should be part of our corporate responsibilities to look after our brothers.

“It has not been like this before, but we have insisted that in as much as our people are far away as the sea, we shall have an impact upon their lives, and they should understand that they also have brothers elsewhere.”

The director-general called on the victims to judiciously utilise the materials purposefully.

The state Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, while commending NIMASA over what he described as the invaluable gesture to the victims of flood, boat mishaps as well as others affected by natural calamities in the state, said the items were going to be valuable to the affected people in the state.
