Rotary Club Plants Trees, Urges Students to Protect Earth

The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, District 9110, in collaboration with Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) and Kuramo Secondary School, Victoria Island, has embarked on a Tree Planting Campaign.

The planting of trees was done at Kuramo Secondary School, Victoria Island to mark Year 2021 Tree Planting Day titled ‘preserving the earth’.

At the event which was held in Lagos on Tuesday, the President, the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, Rotarian Ayotunde Olayinka, urged students to take ownership of their world as the next generation belongs to them.

He said their generation must therefore protect the world now and compel the adult population to also do so to make the Earth a habitable future environment for them.

The trees planted today, according to him, will be of great benefit to the environment for many generations.

While addressing members and staff of the school, he said tree planting was part of Rotary Club’s intentional ways to mitigate the increasing climate change concerns and make the world a better place to live in.

According to him, planting trees around the school premises will help to absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen which is required for man and animal living, adding that it will also reduce urban heat effects through evaporative cooling .

The chairman of the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden Environmental Committee, Rotarian Abiodun Olawale-Cole while speaking at the event also reiterated that trees planted in coastal cities such as Lagos will reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, which eventually limits erosion and pollution of our waterways .

Also, speaking at the event, the club’s Environmental Committee, Rotarian Ope Allen also confirmed that the club had entered into a maintenance contract with an horticultural company to maintain all the Club’s past tree projects on the Lekki Peninsula and promises that this will not be an exemption.

The Principal of Kuramo Secondary School, Victoria Island, Mr Dawodu commended the president and the club for the project and for supporting the school always.

In her closing remark, the President-elect of Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, Rotarian Gbemisola Aruwayo-Obe, thanked the representatives of LASPARK present led by Mrs Kuponu for their support through the years while also reiterating the commitment of the club to supporting the school in years to come.
