Nonso Madueke: Finds Home at Philips Stadium

After a scintillating season with PSV Eindhoven, speculations were rife on his move to the English Premier League with Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur leading the race for Nonso Madueke signature. Against all odds, the Anglo-Nigerian decided to elongate his stay at the Philips Stadium with a contract extension

Nonso Madueke appears to have ended speculation surrounding his future after putting pen to paper on a new deal at Dutch Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven.

The Daily Mail had reported that the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on the England youth international of Nigerian descent ahead of a possible move this summer.

Madueke has been rewarded for his fine performances since the season began with a new contract that keeps him at the Eindhoven-based club until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
In nine matches this term, the 19-year-old tallied six goals, including a brace versus Ajax Amsterdam in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, and contributed an assist.

Speaking after the new deal was confirmed, Madueke said on PSV’s official website: “I have felt at home at PSV from day one. We are going to make it a great time together in Eindhoven, with wonderful football evenings.”
Director of Football Affairs John de Jong was delighted that the Anglo-Nigerian has extended his contract amid interest from foreign clubs.

“There was a lot of interest from foreign clubs in Noni, but we wanted to connect Noni to PSV even longer. After good talks with Noni and his family, he succeeded in extending his contract until 2025.

“We as a club are very happy that Noni will stay and we look forward to a successful collaboration,” de Jong said.
Madueke joined the youth team of PSV in the summer of 2018 after stops at Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

Indeed, PSV Eindhoven manager Roger Schmidt had always been confident that Madueke will remain at the club next season amid speculation linking the winger with possible moves to Premier League clubs in the summer. Schmidt has a plan in order to convince the England U-21 international of Nigerian descent to stay, by citing the development of Mason Mount and Phil Foden at Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

Mount and Foden are products of Chelsea and Manchester City academies and rose through the ranks before establishing themselves as first team regulars.

Speaking to reporters, Schmidt said: “Noni is just such a player who can go through this development. He has the potential, but now he also needs the experience.

“He has a lot of potential playing football and mentally, but here we offer him the space to continue his development.
“We talk to him a lot. Not necessarily about the rumours. It is clear to me that he will stay.”

The 19-year-old Madueke, a product of Tottenham Hotspur academy, has been involved in 17 goals in 30 matches in the current season despite his limited game time.
The youngster was born in England, but he is also eligible to represent the three-time African champions through his parents.
Madueke has indeed revealed he is open to representing Nigeria at the international level despite being born in England.

Madueke has caught the eye of many this season following his brilliant start to life in the Dutch Eredivisie. The former Tottenham youth player also has one goal and two assists in the Europa League this season. His impressive performances have brought him into public consciousness with his international future now a subject of debate.

Madueke was born in England and has represented the Three Lions at youth level. However, he also qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his parents, and he could consider switching allegiance to the three-time African champions.

When asked about his international future, Madueke told The Sun: “I am only 18, so I have got to be open to everything. If I had a closed mindset, I would not be where I am now, so for sure I am open to both.

“We just have to see in the future what is best.” Should he decide to switch allegiance, Madueke will join the likes of Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina and Joe Aribo in the list of players who chose Nigeria ahead of England.

Chukwunonso ‘Noni’ Madueke has inked a new four-year contract with PSV Eindhoven that will keep him with the Red-and-white until the summer of 2025.

Agreeing to a new deal with the Dutch giants has put to bed all the transfer rumours surrounding the English youth international of Nigerian descent.

Noni Madueke had been linked to virtually most of the top clubs in Europe, with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Arsenal, Leicester City, and Tottenham Hotspurs believed to be the front-runners for his signature.

It was no surprise because the 19-year-old has been excellent for PSV on the domestic scene and in Europe, drawing a comparison with former Real Madrid star Arjen Robben.
However, the exciting attacker has committed his future to the Philips Stadion landlords after extending his contract until 2025.

“Ever since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed from everything that this is the best place to develop,” the youngster told the club’s official website.
“I, therefore, did not hesitate for a moment to stay here longer. I have felt at home at PSV from day one.
“We are going to make it a great time together in Eindhoven, with wonderful football evenings.”
