Breaking: Bashir Tofa, Ex-presidential Candidate, is Dead

Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the June 12, 1993 election, is dead.

Tofa, according to family sources, died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in the early hours of Monday after a brief illness. He was aged 74.

Confirming his death, one of the deceased relations, said: “Alhaji Bashir Tofa died after a brief illness.”

Tofa was the challenger of late Chief MKO Abiola, candidate of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), winner of the June 12 election. The result of the election, which was not fully released officially, was annulled by the military regime of President Ibrahim Babangida.

Born on June 20, 1947 in Kano, the late Tofa was also a businessman, oil trader and industrialist.
