Ghanaian School Confirms Team for International Schools Athletics

As Lagos prepares to host the inaugural edition of the  International Schools Athletics Championships scheduled to begin on 14th March,  2022, The Light Academy, a private college in Ghana has confirmed a 16-man strong team for the championship. 

The Ghanaians are competing in the boys and girls’ U-13 and U-15 100m races as well as the relays amongst other events. Their entry makes it over 30 schools now confirmed for the one-week athletics fiesta.

The competition, a brain child of Olympic Gold Medalist, Enefiok Udo-Obong is supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and The Nigeria Schools Sport Federation. 

The international schools athletics championship is designed to bring high level competition to kids at the early stage to expose them to international standards.

According to Udo-Obong, “It is hoped that it creates a truly international event that brings together students from all over Africa, breaking down social and cultural barriers to celebrate the talents and diversity our continent boasts of. “The bringing of kids from different backgrounds, cultures and educational systems to enhance social integration, friendship and promote true Olympism.”

Already, schools like Whitesands Lagos, Osadenis Mixed Secondary School Asaba, Command Secondary School Ipaja, Graceland School Uyo and The Foundation Science Secondary School Zaria, Kaduna State amongst others have sent in their entries. 

Udo-Obong also listed a number of government schools to also take part in the championships.

This is the first time public and private primary and secondary schools would compete in an open competition.

The event is scheduled to run from the March 14  through  March 19, 2022.
