Steven Ndukwu: Participating in The 2022 YouTube Black Class Transformed My Channel
YouTube content creator and tourism influencer Steven Ndukwu, is one of the 26 African content creators selected for the 2022 YouTube Black Class, an initiative that seeks to empower and uplift black content creators on the platform.
Ndukwu’s channel, known for its educating travel narratives and insightful real estate explorations across Africa, reshapes the African narrative, featuring captivating videos that showcase the continent’s tourist destinations, diverse cultures, and vibrant lifestyles. Not only does he delve into captivating travel stories, but he also provides unique insights into real estate developments across the continent, engaging with the visionary minds behind these projects.
Speaking about his experience of being selected for the YouTube Black Fund, Steven said, “The YouTube Black Voices Fund is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering black creators to flourish on the platform. It spans across geographies, encompassing creators from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, the UK, the US, and Canada.” He added that the application process involved showcasing impactful content and demonstrating consistency and a substantial following.
“When I joined the class, I had around 35,000 subscribers. By the time I completed the program, my subscriber count had surged to over 108,000. It wasn’t just about improving my video quality; it was about understanding the intricate workings of YouTube’s algorithm,” he reflected.
Ndukwu’s personal journey within the program has been one of growth and enlightenment. Leveraging the funding and comprehensive training provided, Ndukwu’s subscriber base grew from about 30,000 to over 250,000 subscribers within thirteen months. He attributes this growth to strategic collaboration with his partner manager, who helped craft new content ideas and growth strategies, solidifying his position as a prominent figure on the platform.
“The YouTube Black Class exposed me to a wealth of knowledge through expert-led classes and workshops, enabling creators to navigate the platform more effectively,” he said. “These insights are crucial, as YouTube’s success is inherently tied to the thriving community of creators who contribute diverse and engaging content.”
As a member of the YouTube Black Class, Steven reaped substantial benefits, including access to a dedicated YouTube Partner Manager, who provided guidance and assistance for channel growth.
He also received $20,000 in seed funding, which he used to enhance the quality of his content, expand his travel opportunities, invest in better equipment, and create employment opportunities.
Reflecting on the profound impact of the YouTube training on his career, he enthused, “It provided me with invaluable networking opportunities, positioned me as a Black Voices Fund creator, and facilitated personal and professional growth. The insights shared during the program are not easily accessible elsewhere, making it a truly unique experience.”
