For Babatunde Raji Fashola, Silence is Golden

Highlife

Really, there are different categories of public figures. There are those that take up office with an intention to sway and show off. These are the most common public office holders in Nigeria, and they are always in the news even though they are not doing anything well.

Then, there are the others: they are quiet, are committed and satisfied to do their jobs, and tend to keep their plans to themselves. The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, belongs to the latter category. At a time when everybody wanted to be president, he stood out in silence.

History will not be very kind to some of the current political leaders in Nigeria. It was in their time that the presidency became like a bone that every dog wanted to snatch for a long-term enjoyment. So, while nearly all the reputable politicians and public figures are going out of their way to be recognised in the march for the presidency in 2023, it is relieving to see Fashola minding his work and business.

When declarations for the presidency started a few months ago, someone said that Fashola would be among those that would set their eyes on the mantle and contest for it. Alas, the primaries are well underway and the former Lagos Governor has not said a word. It is evident now that he has no intention to run for the presidency, recognising the futility of such an endeavour.

A few weeks ago, there were about 40 presidential aspirants. When the primaries for the main parties were only a few days away, the number shrunk significantly. We all know that all of this was to get financial benefits and security for the future. This makes Fashola’s refusal to join this horrid business even more apparent.

So, as the presidential narrative continues to unfold, individuals like Fashola are interestingly shining in their silence.
