With a Chairman Like Ayu…

Talk about the national chairman of a political party without tact, requisite neutrality and the maturity to manage complicated situations as much as impossible political tendencies, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, comes to mind with a medal to his name. His role in the eventual outcome of the PDP presidential convention, has not only exposed him, but what he’s capable of. And that, for the PDP, is something to file away. 

Three days to the convention was when the real Ayu started unraveling. He changed dramatically, away from the facade he had hitherto presented as a leader for all. He was said to have personally led the charge against the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, insisting he must be dropped at all cost.

Not just that, it was the same Ayu, who led the pressure on the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, to step down for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the eventual winner of the PDP ticket. This was because as a four-horse race, it was clear Wike would win. Even if Tambuwal had withdrawn from the race and Atiku did not, Wike was still on the cusp of victory. 

But when you look at the composition of the convention committee, it was deliberately slanted to favour Atiku. Look at some of the members: Ben Obi, Adamu Waziri, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Jerry Gana and Saka Balogun among others. Besides, Ayu was also meant to be at the convention with his resignation letter, just in case. 

However, for Tambuwal, who was supposed to have resigned before the convention, his announcement, which didn’t come the first time, evidently swung the votes in favour Atiku, because Ayu, had allegedly sold the idea that the party would collapse with the emergence of Wike. Ayu’s plans eventually worked out, the reasons he could not hide his excitement the next day, when he visited Tambuwal and described him as “the hero of the convention”. 

That statement, of course, gave Ayu away and exposed his chicanery, while keeping the supposed face of a father for all. His biases are sheer bigotry and his insincerity is unbefitting of the office he occupies. For a man, who fell short of basic decency and flaunted same without caution, nothing more could be indicative of who he truly is: Ambidextrous!  2 Attachments
