Teams Share N1m in First Leg of Lagos Athletics Club Series
The top teams that excelled at the maiden Lagos Athletics Club Series shared the N1million purse made available by the organisers for the first leg of the N10m-prize money tournament held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex at the weekend.
From the final table made available after the first leg, Agroterra Blessed Club topped the table with 4746 points while Eaglesight Club and Udo-Obong Wolves garnered 4574 and 3710 points respectively.
Other clubs that made the top five on the table include Osheku Striders (2664) and No Sweat Club (1770).
The tournament is being organised by the Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA) and is aimed at encouraging club participation in tournaments as well as encouraging athletes to work as a team.
According to the Technical Director of LSAA, Enefiok Udo-Obong, the performance of the athletes was impressive, especially some upcoming athletes that dusted the established ones.
“I can tell you that it was indeed an excellent performance from the athletes and a well-attended event with over 655 participants registered by the 24 clubs that featured in the first leg. It was very competitive as some young athletes gave good accounts of themselves against some already-known athletes. The athletes and teams were delighted with the cash reward and we hope more teams will be part of the tournament in the second leg come April,” he said.
Meanwhile, the winner of one of the women’s 200m finals Ada Bright of Osheku Striders described the event as an opportunity for her to showcase her talents as well as test her strength against some top athletes. “I think I ran very well and I am hoping to be improving in each leg of the competition. My aim and target is to better my time and which I hope is possible,” she said.
