Group Urges APC to Cede Senate Presidency to North-west
Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano
The National Alliance for Legislation and Good Governance, (NALGG) has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC), the president-elect and other stakeholders to shift the leadership of the 10th National Assembly to North-west and micro-zone it to Kano state.
This was contained in a statement that was jointly signed and issued to THISDAY by the Convener of the group, Comrade Muhammad Auwal and the group’s Secretary, Dr. Mujitapha Bello.
The body of experts, which includes academics, social commentators, journalists and other professionals based the demand on the premise that It is no doubt, APC’s victory at the just concluded elections, especially the National Assembly, was a collective task across the country.
“But more significantly, Northern Nigeria contributed the most votes, which ensured Asiwaju and APC victory. The region gave APC 38.9 per cent.”
“Of that figure, North-west alone gave 27.3 per cent, to ensure victory at the polls, stamping its authority as a power block in any political contestations in the country. As such, the region should be compensated adequately.”
“In North-west, Kano State alone gave the APC and Asiwaju, the single highest figure in the presidential election, which sealed his victory” they stressed.
The group further asserted that if the leadership of the Senate was zoned to North-west, and specifically Kano State, the most ranking Senator in the entire region, distinguished Senator Barau I. Jibrin should be the senate president.
“This is because Sen. Barau has the competence, capacity and cognate experience to be the next president of the Senate” they added.
The group further revealed that the South-west has the Presidency, North-east has vice president, the North Central has National Party Chairman and the North-West, which incidentally contributed to the electoral fortunes, is seemingly left in the cold.
The group postulated that they are unmindful of concerns raised in some quarters, on the choice of competent individuals, especially Sen Barau I. Jibrin, who is vying to be president of the Senate, on the basis of his faith, owing to the APC same-faith ticket, at the general elections.
“Looking at the APC same-faith ticket, it has proven to be a mere strategic, political winning formula, as seen in the last general election” the group asserted.
They, however noted that, “The Renewed Hope”, of the APC, under the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would be made possible and seamless if there was a robust leadership of the National Assembly.
