From Bank IT Support to Global Cybersecurity Pioneer: Michael Ojih’s Mission to Democratize Digital Security

In an exclusive interview, Michael Ojih, a cybersecurity innovator and co-founder of InfoAssure Limited and Safe Welkin Limited, shares his journey from bank IT support to becoming a driving force in making enterprise-level cybersecurity accessible to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Welcome, Michael! You’ve had an extraordinary career in cybersecurity. What sparked your interest in this field?
Thank you for having me! My journey began as a bank IT and ATM support staff member. Working night shifts at the disaster recovery centre, I observed firsthand the critical importance of cybersecurity. A mentor suggested pursuing the CISSP certification, which planted the seed. I started with foundational certifications like ITIL, which I aced with a perfect score, and never looked back. That discipline and vision drive me today in running two companies, InfoAssure Limited and Safe Welkin Limited, as well as develop Compass, our revolutionary compliance management platform.

Could you tell us more about InfoAssure Limited and what inspired its establishment?
I co-founded InfoAssure Limited with a clear mission: to bridge the cybersecurity gap for SMEs. Many smaller businesses can’t afford the high fees of big consulting firms, yet they face the same cyber threats. We’re democratising cybersecurity by offering top-tier services at competitive rates, essentially levelling the playing field for SMEs to thrive securely in this digital era.

You mentioned Compass. What makes it a game-changer in the industry?
Compass is more than just a compliance tool; it’s a revolution for organisations struggling with regulatory complexities. Its integrated compliance frameworks, automated risk management, and user-friendly interface make cybersecurity accessible. Imagine a small business navigating PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and GDPR compliance with ease—that’s the power of Compass. It’s our way of simplifying complex requirements and empowering businesses to succeed.

Your expansion to the UK and Ghana through Safe Welkin Limited is intriguing. What’s the strategic thinking behind this move?
Expanding to the UK and Ghana was a strategic decision. Safe Welkin serves as the global audit arm of our operations, ensuring independence and credibility. The UK’s dynamic tech ecosystem offers the perfect platform to foster innovation, create jobs, and introduce advanced tools like GDPR modules in Compass. It’s about contributing to the global cybersecurity narrative while making a tangible impact locally.

You hold multiple certifications. How have they contributed to your success?
Certifications aren’t just badges of honour—they’re tools for staying ahead in a constantly evolving field. From CEH to PCI DSS QSA, each certification equips me with unique perspectives and skills. They’ve enabled me to build comprehensive security strategies and ensure industry compliance. It’s like having a Swiss army knife for every cybersecurity challenge.

How are you adjusting to life in the UK?
It’s been an exciting chapter! Liverpool, where I live, has a thriving tech community that’s welcoming and innovative. I’ve also explored other hubs like Manchester and London. The UK’s collaborative environment aligns perfectly with my commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

What’s been the most rewarding aspect of your career?
Seeing businesses transform under the shield of robust cybersecurity. I feel fulfilled knowing I’ve contributed to their success by protecting their assets, reputations, and customers. It’s about making the digital world safer, one organisation at a time.

Your involvement with ISACA seems significant. How has it shaped your professional goals?
ISACA has been instrumental in shaping my leadership style and global perspective. As a two-term board member of ISACA Lagos and a committee member, I’ve championed cybersecurity advocacy and mentorship. Joining the ISACA Liverpool Chapter is my next goal, where I want to collaborate with industry experts and promote digital trust.

How do you manage to be a founder of two innovative companies while working as a full-time CISO of a financial technology company?
Multitasking at this level requires a clear vision, strategic delegation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As a founder, I set the direction, build strong teams, and empower them to execute with precision. I’m fortunate to work with highly skilled professionals who share my passion and effectively carry out our mission at InfoAssure and Safe Welkin.
As CISO, I align cybersecurity strategies with business objectives, lead cross-functional teams, and manage complex security frameworks. Over the years, I’ve developed a knack for prioritising tasks, making data-driven decisions, and optimising workflows.

What’s next for Michael Ojih?
I focus on expanding Safe Welkin into a global brand, enhancing Compass for GDPR and SOC 2 compliance, and mentoring aspiring cybersecurity professionals. The future is about creating impact and leaving a legacy of security and innovation.

Any final advice for aspiring cybersecurity professionals?
Never stop learning. Cybersecurity is an evolving field, and staying ahead requires curiosity and commitment. Also, don’t be afraid to start small—small steps lead to giant leaps.
