Foundation Empowers Indigents to Mark Anniversary, Says Eradicating Poverty Duty of All

A non governmental organization (NGO), Abu Mmaduaburochukwu Foundation, has empowered over 1,000 indigent people in Awka, Anambra State, to mark its 6th anniversary.

The founder of the group, Mr Mmaduaburochukwu Attah, a real estate mogul and transporter during the event said that the job of lifting people from poverty is not solely the responsibility of government. Attah who used the opportunity to mark his 37th birthday said: “We cannot all wait for government to take people out of poverty, everybody can contribute their quota. “What you have seen here are things we have been doing since six years now since we incorporated this foundation.

I grew up from a poor home, and I try to help people who are in lack, the best way that I can.” Attah during the exercise, the foundation distributed 550 bags of 10kg rice and beans to widows and disabled persons, eight sewing machines and six hair dryers to graduates of training institutes. He also gave out laptops to graduates, wrappers to indigent women and scholarships for secondary school students.

Beneficiaries, including Miss Joy Ani from Enugu State and Mrs Nwanya Nwaka Attah from Awka praised Attah for the gesture. Ani said: “I’m sure he is not the richest man in Awka, I’m not even from Anambra State. He came to our institute and saw me and asked me to forward my name as those to benefit sewing machine, to support me as I graduate.

” Wife of the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Ikemi Echeng who led wives of police officers to the event for the empowerment of some of their members said it would not be the first time police officers wives are benefiting from the foundation. Echeng who was represented by wife of Officer in charge of Operations in Anambra State Police command, Mrs Odumu said just last year, the foundation gave out scholarships to children of police officers and also empowered some wives of police officers.
