Dominican University (DU), Ibadan, Nigeria, has announced the upcoming event , “Walk for a Healthy Nation”, scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 7 am in Lagos.
The walk, themed around promoting physical wellbeing, will start at Periwinkle Estate, Freedom Way in Lekki, Lagos, and culminate at Amore Gardens, Lekki.

DU is the first university founded by the Order of Preachers (also known as ‘Dominicans’) on the African continent, and has a distinguished history in university education. With its deep-rooted intellectual legacy, the Dominican university is committed not just to nurturing the mind and body of its students and staff, but also considers it a duty to help promote a culture of healthy lifestyle among Nigerians.

Therefore, the “Walk for a Healthy Nation” is an initiative of the university aimed at encouraging healthy living among the academic community and the general public. Recognising the undeniable benefits of regular physical exercise on mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing, the university is taking proactive steps to promote holistic development.

Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving cognitive function, memory, and concentration. It also contributes to cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and helps maintain a healthy weight.
This walk presents an excellent opportunity for students, staff, and members of the community to come together in support of healthy living. By participating in this event, attendees will not only embrace an active lifestyle but also contribute to creating awareness about the significance of physical exercise.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Dominican University, Professor Hyginus Ekwuazi, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “At Dominican University, we believe in the all-round development of our students and staff. This walk signifies our commitment to promoting physical exercise and healthy living, fostering a culture of all round wellbeing within our academic community.”

This “Walk for a Healthy Nation” aligns with the university’s longstanding dedication to the development of the whole person. The philosophical bent of the university is to promote integral (holistic) development of the human person. Recently we see a lot of young people dying suddenly around the country for no apparent cause. We are convinced that exercise and a healthy lifestyle is the answer.
