Lucid on the Power of Authenticity

Young and purpose-driven, 21-year-old Lucid is not afraid to experiment with his creative process. This was evident in his debut EP ‘Hi I’m Lulu,’ which serves as an introductory sonic letter to his music fans. The EP boasts six tracks that capture his life experiences; from family to relationships. Not shy to be vulnerable with his experiences,  Lucid, whose real name is Victor Nanribetmun, is poised to produce music that will remain indelible in the minds of his listeners. In this chat, he talks about how being vulnerable makes his music authentic and relatable.

What inspired the narrative of your EP?

My life experiences mixed with a bit of what I see happening daily.

Your opening track “Blessings” chronicles your personal story. How challenging was it to share these experiences?

It wasn’t really challenging for me because I’ve always seen music as a means of telling stories to people and passing messages. But I’d understand why it could be seen as challenging because of how frank I was with the lyrics, word for word. Sometimes it’s just best to tell it as it is. And I hope my story inspires people to keep grinding, to keep moving no matter what. It’s always one step at a time.

Were there any unexpected outcomes or discoveries during the creative process of the EP?

Yes, there were some outcomes and discoveries. I learned a lot more about myself. I realized there’s so much to sing about and some of these I never paid attention to. I learned that sometimes it’s best to tell it as it is regardless because your story being raw could be more relatable to people and it could make people feel much better about themselves.

What significant influences have shaped your growth as an artist?

My family and relationships. I learned a lot about love from my family and some relationships I’ve been in, how strong a friendship bond could be, and how to understand people. And of course, I’ve learned some lessons from the OG’s in the music industry like how important consistency is. There always has to be hard work in order to get good outcomes. And I’d say I’m blessed to be the kind of person that easily learns and tries to adapt quickly. Plus I’m never scared of trying things out. I experiment a lot and that came from some life experiences. It’s okay to make use of your creativity in numerous ways.

How do you envision your music evolving and resonating with listeners in the future?

I know there are always going to be people who connect to my music and my sound out there because I sing about life itself. People relate to things that relate to them. There are so many things happening that some people can’t come out to talk about and I’m willing to tell it all, well if not all at least for the most part of it, I’ll be telling stories and passing messages that need to be passed. And I want my sound to always make people feel better about themselves, and also to make people happy, to put smiles on faces. And my evolving process will always be affected hugely by the way I think and how I see life.

What’s the story behind the stage name “Lucid”?

The name “lucid” means transparency. To be lucid can be seen as a clear expression, and making things easy for people to understand. And it connects to me personally because people get to understand the kind of person I am easily through my art, and the messages I pass and the stories I tell in my songs are easily understood by my audience. It also means brightness in the sense that I stand out from other people, I’m different and you’ll easily know that because it’s obvious, it’s bright to your sight and it’s clear in my sound.
