With over 20 fashion entrepreneurs and designers representing their brand across Nigeria, the Lagos Fashion Finest Africa Event has once again stamped its relevance as one of the biggest fashion exhibitions in Nigeria. It was a convergence of creativity, innovation, styles, designs, cultural influences, and inspiring craftsmanship. This year’s edition shinned the spotlight on a few good and prospective fashion designers and their brands and gave fashion consumers and critics an extensive look into a new wave of fashion trends and the brains behind those fashion innovations that would in the foreseeable future compete with fashion designers on a global scale and propel Nigeria’s fashion industry be an integral source of IGR for the Nigerian economy. There were a few designers whose prolific representation of fashion left us in awe, but who caught our eye and captured our heart is Clothes by Moray, a fashion brand owned by Oke Morenikeji.
Clothes by Moray exhibited one of their latest collection, the Gemini Collection. The collection whose name was to imply the period of the creation in line with zodiac signs featured a variety of African fabrics and textiles, fashion accessories, cultural representation, and a dose of Western fashion to elevate the beauty of the collection’s Africanness. The brand’s use of Adire and Ankara differentiated them from the rest. The tailoring was neat and appealing to the eyes, the designs were distinct and easily completed with varying fashion accessories, and the distinct feature of each reminded one of a time in the past in terms of fashion in the Nigerian space creating a lot of talking points. One can say that it was a fusion of retro designs and innovative ideas that can transform the Nigerian fashion industry.
Both fabrics were used to tailor fine dresses and skirts. Morenikeji’s idea beamed with excitement as she combined ideas of glamour in dresses according to the fashion sense of diverse culture to invent the most appealing and artistic designs; making each knit, cut, and stitch to combine beautifully. The fabrics which are firm in texture and colourful in appearance provided elegance and simplicity. There were also crop tops and t-shirts made from Adire, jackets made from a mix of denim material and Ankara and vintage dresses created from other featured fabrics. It was a sight to behold, one of exclusivity and freshness of ideas.
Clothes by Moray came with a fashion catalogue which gave fashion consumers an easy way to browse through the designs in the collection and gave an insight into their expansive portfolio. They are one of the fashion brands to watch out for, and without a doubt, their confidence and team spirit will spur them to rank amongst the best. The exhibition was indeed a fashionable affair.
