The federal government of Nigeria has commiserated with the government and people of the Republic of Italy over the death of their former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi, the former prime minister who reshaped Italy’s political and cultural landscape while fending off multiple legal and sex scandals, died on Monday at the age 86.

According to his spokesman, the billionaire media mogul and former owner of AC Milan Football Club was admitted to a Milan hospital last Friday, for what aides said were pre-planned tests related to his leukemia.

In a statement signed yesterday, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, described the late leader as a source of great inspiration to many, both within and outside his country, particularly in the areas of sports and media development.

Omayuli, said relations between Nigeria and Italy remained cordial and mutually beneficial during his time in power.

The statement added: “The federal government of Nigeria extends its condolences to the family of the late former Prime Minister and prays for the repose of his soul.”
