In a groundbreaking move, the federal government and some well meaning non governmental organizations have unveiled a powerful tool in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs): the NTD-WASH dashboard.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja, program manager of trachoma at the Ministry of Health Nicola Olobio, emphasized the importance of this milestone.
He explained that neglected tropical diseases encompass a range of 20 conditions that plague impoverished communities, especially in tropical areas, with women and children suffering the most.
He noted that the dashboard is designed to provide comprehensive information on the progress made in tackling tropical diseases, with a special focus on reaching the most underserved communities.
Furthermore, he said by addressing the crucial issues of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) through this dashboard, the government aims to significantly improve the quality of WASH services in areas where they are currently lacking.
Olobio highlighted the direct correlation between WASH services and the elimination of NTDs, stating unequivocally that without adequate WASH, the battle against these diseases cannot be won.
One of the key challenges faced in combating NTDs is changing people’s behavior, particularly in relation to open defecation.
Olobio candidly admitted that altering deeply ingrained behaviors is no easy feat.
Adding that consequently, the government has sought to bridge the gap by engaging the WASH sector, recognizing its crucial role in supporting NTD interventions.
The country director of Sightsavers Nigeria Sunday Isiyaku, lauded the introduction of the NTD-WASH dashboard as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders.
He explained that the tool will provide invaluable insights into the impact of interventions implemented to combat NTDs.
Isiyaku reiterated Sightsavers’ unwavering commitment to partnering with the WASH and NTD sectors in the pursuit of eliminating NTDs, with a particular focus on trachoma in Nigeria.
The launch of the NTD-WASH dashboard marks a monumental stride forward in the battle against neglected tropical diseases.
With this innovative tool at their disposal, policymakers, researchers, and organizations can now track progress, identify gaps, and forge targeted strategies to ensure that no community is left behind.
The government’s unwavering dedication to addressing the root causes of NTDs through improved WASH services promises a brighter, healthier future for all Nigerians.
