PDP Chieftain Kidnapped in Akwa Ibom
Okon Bassey in Uyo
The Deputy Coordinator of a political pressure group of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Divine Mandate Campaign Organisation, in Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Eyo Okon Edet, was last Monday kidnapped at his petrol station at Marina Oron in the state.
Sources said Edet, who is the chairman of Eyotech oil Nigeria Limited, was accosted by his abductors last Monday evening when he visited his filling station.
He was beaten and whisked away in their Toyota Sienna vehicle.
It was gathered that the abductors subsequently transferred him to a waiting speed boat at the sea and set the vehicle they came with for the operation ablaze.
Meanwhile, the abductors are yet to contact the family for ransom or reason for their action.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said: “He was there at his filling station when those boys came, dragged him into their Sienna vehicle and shot sporadically into the air. They took him to a spot and put him into a speed boat and set their vehicle (Sienna) on fire.”
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident, and said the state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered investigation into the matter.
He said: “We received the information; the Commissioner of Police, Durosinmi, has visited the scene of the incident, and went to the water front, even as the Toyota Sienna used to perpetuate the act that was burnt has been recovered.
“Investigations have commenced already, and I’m sure the perpetrators will be brought to book soon.”
