Nigeria’s Leather Industry: A Promising Pathway to Economic Growth
Nigeria’s leather industry is undeniably living up to its aspiration as a promising pathway to economic growth. In this piece, Rebecca Ejifoma explores the driving forces behind the development of the industry and its positive impact on her economy, as the Lagos Leather Fair will hold from June 17th to 18th in Victoria Island Lagos
Nigeria is materially and economically blessed, if not the most, in Africa. This enviable status, leaders believe, can be further strengthened through intentional trade exportation of her produce. Thus, they have seen the need for the nation to increase the list of exported products like crude oil, cocoa, cotton, cashew and many others. That addition is leather.
This development comes to bear owing to the realisation that the nation’s leather industry, which has emerged as a significant player in the country’s economy, showcases the immense potential for economic growth and development.
Indeed, with a plethora of resources, skilled artisans, and an emerging domestic and international market, individuals and organisations are confident that Nigeria is well-positioned to become a global hub for leather production, contributing to job creation, export revenue, and economic diversification.
Interestingly, their thoughts align with significant industry players, who described the leather industry as the next gold mine after oil and gas.
According to them, if well harnessed, it can propel economic growth and create job opportunities for Nigeria’s unemployed youth over the next five years. Even the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) projected that the sector could potentially bring in earnings of US$1 billion by 2025.
Abundant Resources
Nigeria boasts many resources to establish a powerhouse of the leather industry. Research shows that the nation is home to a large livestock population — cattle, goats, sheep, and other animals, which provide an invaluable source of raw materials.
These resources are high-quality hides and skins. They form the foundation for producing a wide range of leather products, from stylish shoes and exquisite bags to posh furniture and upholstery.
Skilled Artisans and Craftsmanship
The tradition of craftsmanship runs deep in Nigeria. Also, the nation parades many skilled artisans who bring the magic of their expertise to the forefront by transforming raw materials into extraordinary finished leather goods.
These artisans have learnt the ropes. They have honed their skills over generations, blending traditional techniques with modern design trends in high demand at home and abroad.
Job Creation and Economic Empowerment
Being one of the highest producers of leather and finished leather products in Africa, the growth of Nigeria’s leather industry brings with it significant opportunities for job creation and economic empowerment.
This industry provides job opportunities to farmers, livestock rearers, tanners, designers, manufacturers, and retailers. As this industry flourishes, it creates a cascade of jobs throughout its value chain, alleviating unemployment and improving livelihoods in both rural and urban areas.
Export Potentials
With an increasing global appetite for high-quality leather products, Nigeria’s leather industry holds tremendous export potential. Nigerian leather goods are admired worldwide for their durability, exquisite craftsmanship, and distinctive designs.
By leveraging this competitive advantage, Nigerian manufacturers can participate in international markets, which opens doors for foreign direct investments and valuable foreign exchange earnings.
Furthermore, strategic alliances between these manufacturers and global retailers and distributors further fuel the export possibilities of Nigerian leather products.
Supportive Government Policies
Nigeria’s government is vital in steering the industry towards growth. The inception of initiatives like the National Leather and Leather Products Policy (NLPP) and the creation of leather clusters provide a favourable environment for investment and development.
These policies aim to induce value, facilitate financing, foster innovation, and encourage research and development in the sector.
It will also nurture a conducive business ecosystem and contribute to the country’s rapid economic growth and unrestrained advancement.
Undeniably, Nigeria’s leather industry holds immense promise for economic growth and diversification. The country’s abundant raw materials, skilled artisans, and supportive government policies create a fertile ground for the sector to flourish.
By harnessing its virgin potential and capitalising on the growing global demand for leather products, Nigeria can solidify its position as a leading player in the international leather market, creating jobs, generating export revenue, and contributing to its overall economic prosperity.
