John Shiklam in Kaduna
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani has urged Council Chairmen in the state to shun political, religious and ethnic sentiments in their dealings with the people.
The governor gave the advice yesterday, when chairmen of the 23 Local Government Areas in the state paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Kaduna.
The governor said, “The era of politics is over, there should be no sentiments, no party, religious or ethnic differences in initiating projects.”
He noted that local governments were the most important tier of governance because of their closeness to the people at the grassroots.
The governor called on the council chairmen to join hands with the state government in building sustainable peace and addressing the security challenges, “previously witnessed in the state.”
Sani noted that local governments in Kaduna State have been enjoying financial autonomy in the past eight years, assuring that his administration would continue with the system.
He urged the council chairmen to focus on developmental projects, stressing that the era of buying items and distributing to the people was over.
Sani said, “The state government would partner with local governments for joint projects on infrastructural development, but we need to know what project will benefit our people most.”
Speaking further, the governor said, “Security is the major focus of our administration, we shall work closely with the Local Governments to build trust with the people.
“Our administration will prioritise development of the rural areas by extending infrastructure to all local governments
“In executing rural development programme, we shall adopt all-inclusive approach where local government chairmen as key stakeholders will be carried along.
“Traditional rulers, faith-based organisations, women organisations will also be involved.”
The chairmen were led to the visit by Kaduna State Chapter Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and council chairman of Lere LGA, Abubakar Buba.
