ICAN Chairman Tasks Young Professionals on Mentorship
The Immediate Past Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria Ilupeju/Gbagada and District Society (ICAN IGDS), Prof. Godwin Oyedokun has charged young accountants to harness the power of mentorship to attain desired professional height.
Oyedokun stated this at the investiture of the 3rd Chairman of ICAN IGDS, Dr. Bisiriyu Kolawole Fatai, where he also enjoined professionals to imbibe spirit of integrity and shun any acts that could bring them and the profession into disrepute.
According to Oyedokun, the field of accounting remained a very peculiar and dynamic one that required constant learning and discipline.
He said, “Being a successful accountant goes beyond becoming a graduate or passing professional exams but also to be available for continuous mentorship. I implore our young ones to always thirst for more knowledge and be diligent and patient as they aspire for greater heights.
He noted that the district under his watch paid special attention to the development of young accountants whom he described as the future of ICAN and accounting practice across the globe.
He said, “This is in addition to other noble strides including hosting the first ever ICAN district conference, the ‘Breakfast with Chairman’ initiative to boost members knowledge on practice, and the ‘catch them young’ programme that takes learning to students in the grassroots, amongst others.”
He tasked the incoming president to improve on the tempo that has earned the district its recognition as a model district, while pleading with all stakeholders to extend maximum support to him.
In his acceptance speech, Bisiriyu pledged to move the district to a progressive level, promising not to deviate from the objectives of the district.
He said that the district will continue to nurture young accountants to growth, boost community relations and strive to upgrade IGDS from the current status of category C to B and then A.
Also speaking, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Eti-Osa Constituency and guest of honour, Gbolahan Olusegun Yishawu congratulated Oyedokun on his legacies as a past chairman and also charged Bisiriyu to continue to raise the bar of performance in the district.
