Rohr Extols Dessers’ Quality, Backs Striker to Perform at Rangers
Former Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr has outlined the qualities that Cyriel Dessers will add to the Glasgow Rangers squad.
Rangers completed the signing of the former Cremonese star on Thursday for a fee of five million euros plus 1.5 million euros in performance-related add-ons.
Rohr handed an international debut to Dessers in a friendly against Tunisia in October 2020, bringing him on as a 72nd minute substitute to replace Ahmed Musa.
The Tongeren-born striker is eligible to play international football for Belgium, where he was born, as well at Nigeria through his mother, but has pledged his international future to the three-time African champions.
Dessers is not an unknown quantity in European football circles as he was the top scorer in the inaugural Europa Conference League with 10 goals, and was the top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie for the 2019-2020 season.
In quotes relayed by Daily Record, Rohr said: “Cyriel Dessers is an all-round striker and a player who is perfect for the modern game.
“He is very mobile around the pitch and he’s very fast. He is strong and powerful in the air, comfortable on the ball and can score goals with both feet.
“He is a very disciplined player too. I think would have won more caps than he has, but there was a spell where he wasn’t playing and I couldn’t call him up. “
Rohr added that Dessers made a good impression on and off the pitch during the training camp in Austria.
The 28-year-old has four caps for the Super Eagles, the last of which came in a friendly against Algeria in September 2022.
