Senate Screens Service Chiefs Behind Closed Doors

The Senate has commenced the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs behind closed doors.

The appointees are Major General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS); Rear Admiral Emmanuel. A Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff (CHS); and Air Vice Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, the  Chief of Air Staff (CAS).

The trio had earlier introduced themselves to the federal lawmakers when they gave their separate speeches during plenary on Thursday.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, after the brief self introductory remarks by the service chiefs, asked journalists, parliamentary staff, aides of lawmakers and visitors to leave the chamber and gallery for a closed session.

Tinubu, had on Tuesday, asked the Senate to screen and confirm the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Staff and the service chiefs.

The letter was dated July 5, 2023 and addressed to the President of the Senate, Akpabio.

The letter noted that the request was in compliance with the provisions of Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. Cap A20 Laws the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He asked the Senate to act expeditiously on the request, considering the level of insecurity in the country.

The president appointed the service chiefs when the National Assembly was on recess three week ago.
