LASU Inducts Faculty SGBV Mentors, Captain Mentees

The Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV), Lagos State University, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has inducted SGBV Mentors and Captain Mentees.

The programme aims to empower young women and create an environment that fosters their personal and intellectual development.

Speaking at the induction programme which was held recently at the campus, the Chief Mentor and Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Adenike Boyo, expressed her delight towards the partnership between the CRPSGBV and UNFPA.

She acknowledged the support and constant assistance from UNFPA led by Dr. Aliyu Yakubu and commended the team for their dedication to raising a community of strong and empowered women.

The Vice Chancellor stressed the university’s desire to raise girls who are confident, capable of challenging societal norms, and refuse to be victimized by any form of violence.

She expressed her gratitude to UNFPA Nigeria led by Ulla Muller and the Acting Director, CRPSGBV, Dr. Igot Ofem, for their commitment to the university’s vision to be the best in West Africa.

According to her, “The Mentor-Mentee induction ceremony marked the official commencement of the programme with the theme tagged “PROMOTE MY SISTER”, emphasizing the importance of uplifting and empowering young women.The Mentor-Mentee program was launched on International Women’s Day, and it serves as a platform for female staff members to provide guidance and support to female students.”

The professor of Physiology, also expressed her appreciation to the mentors who are dedicating their time and resources to the Mentor-Mentee programme.

She encouraged the mentees to believe in the support available to them and take full advantage of the programme for their benefit.

For the Head, Lagos Liaison Office for UNFPA, Dr. Aliyu Yakubu, who expressed his excitement and appreciation for LASU’s efforts in preventing sexual and gender-based violence within the university, commended the university for taking proactive measures.

He equally acknowledged the significance of the mentor-mentee programme.

Also speaking , the Acting Director, Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Dr. Igot Ofem, expressed her gratitude to the university management, staff and students for their support.

She highlighted the importance of the collaboration in achieving the center’s objectives in preventing sexual and gender-based violence.

Highlight of the induction ceremony was the
decoration of the faculty SGBV Mentors, Captain Mentees and presentation of certificates by the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

This gesture recognized the mentors’ commitment and encouraged the mentees in their journey towards personal growth and empowerment.

However, the Principal Assistant Registrar and Centre Secretary, Mrs. Olasunbo Akinyemi, while giving the vote of thanks, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders and participants for their contributions to the success of the event.
