The National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS) has appealed to northern governors, philanthropists and political appointees to assist students of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) to enable them pay the recently increased school fees.

The President of the association, Yahaya Usman Kabo, made the call in a statement issued yesterday in Kano. He lamented that many students may leave universities due to their inability to pay the hiked registration fees, especially as the country face economic crunch.

Kabo also urged the federal government and the management of the universities to re-consider the increment in its tuition fees so that children from poor families could continue to have access to higher education.

The Bayero University Kano (BUK) had on June 19 approved an increase in its central registration fees, and administrative and hostel maintenance charges for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students and parents have been undergoing harrowing experiences to settle their school fees since the announcement of the increment of school and accommodation fees by the university’s authorities.

Some students, who are from humble backgrounds, are left with no other option than to abandon their studies since they cannot afford to pay the prohibitive school fees.

Many parents are complaining about the increment saying they have other pressing needs to attend to, including feeding, paying medical bills, and other responsibilities.

They also lamented the high cost of transportation occasioned by the hike in fuel price, which they said has further eroded their ability to pay the escalated school fees.
