Mercedes-Benz is supporting The R&A, the organiser of The Open, golf’s original Championship, which ends tomorrow, with a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including innovative hybrid and all-electric cars.
With the 151st edition of The Open, golf’s original Championship returns to Royal Liverpool in Hoylake. From 16 to 23 July, the only of the four Major Championships played outside the United States will be held on the famous links near Liverpool. The venue will be hosting the elite of golf for the 13th time. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is accompanying The Open for the 12th time as an official partner of the organiser, The R&A, the automaker said in a statement.
The Championship week kicked off with a highlight: The “Return of the Claret Jug”. The iconic trophy is traditionally driven to the venue in a Mercedes-Benz by the 2022 Champion Golfer of the Year and returned to the CEO of The R&A, Martin Slumbers. This year, Cameron Smith had the honour to hand over the Claret Jug. The vehicle for the occasion of the Return of the Claret Jug was very special, a one-off: the Mercedes‑Benz VISION EQXX.
The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is a unique technology demonstrator that has reached a new level in electric mobility through its design, the lightweight construction and the technology used. On one battery charge, the VISION EQXX can cover a distance of 1,000 kilometres in regular road traffic. In parallel with the VISION EQXX, Mercedes-Benz will provide a shuttle fleet during The Open featuring all-electric vehicles again. These will provide on-site mobility for players, officials and selected guests.
“The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX once again shows the great development of electric mobility and we are proud to be able to show the future of electric mobility at The Open. Further, I would like to thank our longstanding partner Mercedes-Benz for supporting The R&A with a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including innovative hybrid and all-electric cars.”
Martin Slumbers, CEO, The R&A
“As a long-time partner of The Open, we share the fascination for the golf sport and are proud to support the prestigious event once more. Alongside providing seamless mobility for The Open with some of our most exciting new fully electric models that we normally inspire our customers with, we were even more thrilled to give fans, officials and players a sneak peek into the future with a guest appearance by the Mercedes‑Benz VISION EQXX.”

From a sports perspective, Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Jon Rahm is one of the Championship favourites. The 28-year-old Spaniard is in great form and has already won a Major Championship this year with his victory at the Masters at the beginning of April.
