Nigeria’s 4x100m Relay Team Qualify for World Championship

After several attempts to be amongst the top 16 teams, Nigeria’s 4x100m relay quartet sneaked into the 14th spot on World Athletics rankings yesterday to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Championship scheduled to hold in Budapest, Hungary next month.

The quartet of Ashe Favour, Alaba Akintola, Ajayi Kanisola and Godson Brume ran 38.26 secs that has now put Nigeria on joint 14th position with Kenya at the Warri Grandprix and Relays which held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

The time was an improvement on the 38.56seconds they did at the Lagos Athletics Series which held at the Yaba Tech Sports ground a fortnight ago.

Speaking on the feat last night, Secretary General of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Rita Mosindi, was full of appreciation to the quartet that made it possible for Nigeria to join the best 16 teams in the world.

“We finally did it after all the hard work, the long travels and also the insults,” said the AFN secretary-general.

“We are all overjoyed by this qualification, because it came with lots of efforts by the athletes and the federation.”

The men’s 4x100m will join the rest of the teams that have already qualified for the Budapest 2023 World Championships, they include the women’s 4×100, Women’s 4x400m and the mixed relay team.
