Rebuild Economic, Sociopolitical Institutions, Tinubu Told
Kuni Tyessi in Nigeria
A group, One Nation for Asiwaju Support Group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to as a matter of urgency, rebuild economic and sociopolitical institutions for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The Director-General of the group, Muhammadu Dagaci Etsugaie, who made the call in Abuja during a victory celebration and a contributory agenda-setting note for the president, said: “The greatest challenges of our democracy today are ignorance, political selfishness, greed, corruption, nepotism, tribal malice and little spiritual content of individuals.”
With the theme: ‘Democracy and its challenges in Nigeria’, the DG noted that popular sovereignty, which is the essence of democracy, exists when the people have the final say on everything, and are the ultimate reference for legislation and the constitution.
He added that this would only be possible “if you are guided by the facts that elections are over and fine with dirty politics of religion and ethnicity.”
“And importantly, ensure proper procedure and orderliness in our governance process to curb corruption that has progressively undermined the rule of law and circumvented the will of the people thus making our growth and moving forward as a nation difficult.
“These challenges can be frontally tackled with the presence of a religious, duty conscious and politically sensitive citizenry with a high democratic participatory spirit which would then lead to the emergence of a credible, competent, caring and morally sensitive political leadership that will, in turn, instill a high public and private morality needed to establish a truly democratic governance whose major tenets will be justice through equal opportunities for the citizenry.
“Mr. President, the best preventives are the immediate rebuilding of our economic and socio-political institutions through good governance, encouragement and economic empowerment of the middle class; respect for the constitution and the rule of law as well as the proper education of the citizenry in the spirit of the constitution.
“Our democracy had been perverted where intimate power has been handed over to a few representatives who continue to extend their outlook and force the system on us no matter how bad it is.
“There is no doubt that democracy in Nigeria is diseased by some of its own principles that have been perverted. Nigeria is today a country driven by financial markets infected by massive multifaceted corruption that knows no borders, unfortunately, the forces which have a stake in maintaining the status quo are far greater than the forces struggling to establish a just social order, at least as a democratic model.”
