The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unmasked over 200 illegal courier and logistics operators in Katsina State as part of its efforts to sanitise and enhance professionalism in the industry.

The General Manager, Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD) of the NIPOST, Mr. Dotun Shonde, disclosed this to newsmen shortly after raiding the illegal courier and logistics operators in the state.

Shonde explained that during the clampdown, NIPOST sealed some of the unlicensed and illegal courier and logistics operators and impounded many motorcycles of the operators in the state.

He said that some of the illegal courier and logistics operators engaged in nefarious activities such as the transportation of illicit drugs, small arms and ammunition and other prohibited items.

He stressed that the illegal activities of the operators poses social, security and economic threat to the development of the country, warning the perpetrators to desist from such acts or face the wrath of the law.

Shonde said that most of the illegal operators were served with demand notice, but they failed to comply, adding that NIPOST would continue to clampdown on such operators until sanity is restored in the sector.

He said: “There are a lot of people operating illegal poster courier, express delivery, distribution and logistics services, and that cannot be allowed. In Katsina alone, we have identified over 200 illegal courier and logistics operators.

“Some of them used unregistered motorcycles without a brand or phone number for carriage of illicit drugs, small arms and ammunition. They should approach the Postmaster General of the Federation for their licences to operate as private operators.”

He added, however, that the NIPOST was leveraging on technology to do e-registration, licence and monitoring for efficient and effective service delivery.
