Optometrists Rally for Justice Following Tragic Loss of Colleague
The Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) has strongly denounced the untimely demise of Dr. Ogechi Ezeagu, a valued member of their organization.
Residing in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, Dr. Ezeagu’s life was tragically cut short on July 10, 2023, following a confrontation with her spouse, as stated by her family.
NOA, under the leadership of President Dr. Anderson Chimeziri, extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the wider Optometry community in Nigeria.
Dr. Chimeziri passionately appeals to the Federal Capital Territory authorities and the Inspector General of Police, urging their intervention in this matter.
Additionally, he calls upon the National Assembly, the National Human Rights Commission, Law Enforcement Agencies, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Civil Society Groups, Non-Governmental Organizations, and concerned individuals to unite forces and ensure that those responsible for harming vulnerable individuals, along with those who facilitate such actions, face appropriate consequences.
“Nigerian Optometric Association remains unwavering in our commitment to this cause. We are implementing strategies to safeguard the well-being of our female members.
“Our collaboration with Women Optometrists in Nigeria (WON) aims to offer legal assistance, shielding our female members—whether single or married—from all forms of mistreatment.
“The welfare of our members remains our top priority. NOA has established a Women Affairs committee to coordinate efforts with established organizations and engage with gender equality advocates, safeguarding our female members from any form of harassment or maltreatment.
“We are vigilantly monitoring the situation surrounding Dr. Ezeagu’s tragic passing and will respond as circumstances demand. The time for change is now,” the statement asserts.
